Orthodontics, which is the branch of dentistry focused on
straightening teeth, dates back all the way to ancient Egypt. Luckily for us,
the methods of aligning teeth have vastly improved. We even have orthodontic
options today that can align teeth with complete discretion. If you’re looking
for a straighter, more beautiful smile, JL Dental is your premiere Arnold
Orthodontist, and we have great options for you!
The History of Orthodontics
While we know that ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and
Etruscans all practiced forms of orthodontia,
straightening teeth really didn’t take off until the 1700’s when Pierre
Fauchard invented an appliance called the bandeau. This was a u-shaped metal
appliance that fit around the teeth and attached to them to correct their
alignment.
Orthodontics really made progress
during the 1800’s when J.S. Gunnell invented the first headgear, which fastened
outside of the mouth to apply pressure to the teeth. In 1880, Edward Hartley
Angle identified the true properties of misalignment and used effective
orthodontic appliances similar to what we use today to address the issues. He
is considered the “Father of Modern Orthodontics.”
In the 1970’s, the invention of dental
adhesives revolutionized orthodontics because brackets could now be glued to
each tooth, instead of being attached with a wire wrapped around the tooth.
During this time stainless steel replaced gold as the metal of choice for
wires, which significantly reduced the cost of orthodontics and made it more
accessible to the masses.
Orthodontics Today
Modern orthodontics has achieved great
things, and now besides using traditional metal brackets and wires to
straighten teeth, we also have the option to use removable clear plastic
aligners that are virtually invisible apply gentle pressure and gradually move
teeth.
This system is called Clear Correct,
and it’s revolutionized orthodontics, offering busy adult and teenage patients
an effective option for straightening their teeth with the utmost discretion. There
are no dietary restrictions or changes to your home care routine with Clear
Correct since aligners are removable, and most cases can be completed in 12-18
months.
