Remember the last time you were out having dinner with family or friends
and had a slip? Yeah, we’re talking about a denture slip, causing difficulty
speaking and making simple activities much more challenging (like enjoying
dinner with loved ones). Drs. Laura and Jonathan Mears can help you address
that frustration with implant-supported dentures. By visiting your dentist in
Arnold, you could be well on your way to a shining, stable smile.
What are “implant-supported” dentures?
Traditional dentures have created new smiles for patients
that have lost the majority of their teeth in their upper and/or lower arches
for many years. Many people are familiar with this type of prosthetic but
become unsure when they hear “implant-supported dentures.” You can relax. Both traditional and
implant-supported dentures are composed of prosthetic teeth attached to an
acrylic gum colored base. The main difference is that traditional dentures rely
on suction and dental adhesives to keep them in place, while the modern version
of dentures are held in place by dental implants. Basically, both options are
providing the same solution, but implant-retained dentures bring much more
comfort and stability. Either Dr. Laura or Dr. Johnathan Mears will actually
attach your prosthetic implants to ensure a secure smile.
New denture technology
Implant-supported dentures are the most stable way to
replace a full smile. The simple process requires three different phases. The
first phase requires the actual implant, a tiny titanium screw that acts as a
replacement for a tooth root, to be placed strategically within various areas
of your mouth. The total number of implants you will receive all depends on the
number of teeth we’re replacing.
The second phase is your healing and recovering process. During
this extremely important phase, a process called osseointegration occurs, meaning your body will be working to fuse
your jawbone/gums with the artificial tooth root (your dental implant).
Osseointergration is what makes implants so stable.
You can expect to return to your dentist in Arnold after a
period of three to six months to complete the last phase of your dental
implants. This phase is relatively easy and probably the most exciting! You will finally be attaching your dental
prosthetic! By completing all three phases, you can expect a functioning,
realistic-looking smile that will last for years. Some of the benefits
of implant supported dentures over traditional dentures are:
·
Less maintenance
·
No more adhesives or pastes
·
Reduced gum irritation
·
Reduced bone loss
·
Exceptional denture support
·
Improved ability to chew and speak
